NEW DELHI – The India Meteorological Department has issued red alerts for extremely heavy rainfall over Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Mahe, and Puducherry today. It has also issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall over coastal and south interior Karnataka till Wednesday.
A red alert indicates very heavy rainfall of over 204.4 mm in 24 hours, and an orange alert is for heavy rainfall of 115.6-204.4 mm.
In view of the extreme rainfall that is forecast over southern India till Wednesday, the IMD has advised farmers to postpone transplanting of paddy seedlings in coastal and south interior Karnataka. It has also asked farmers to postpone planting of ginger and sowing of maize in coastal Karnataka.
The weather bureau has also forecast extremely heavy rainfall over parts of central Maharashtra during Thu-Sat. An orange alert has been issued for heavy rains over Konkan and Goa till Saturday, while for central Maharashtra till Wednesday. The interior parts of Gujarat, parts of Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh have also been issued orange alerts for heavy rainfall for the next three to four days.
In the northwest, heavy rainfall is likely over Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and parts of Uttar Pradesh till Saturday, according to the weather department. Rainfall in the northwest has been 16% below normal since Jun 1, IMD data showed. Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Punjab continue to get below par rainfall.
The IMD has also forecast heavy rainfall over parts of east and northeastern India over the next few days. Some regions of Jharkhand, Odisha, Assam, and the plains of West Bengal are expected to get heavy rainfall during the rest of the week, the bureau said.
The IMD has warned against localised flooding of roads, water logging in low-lying areas and closure of underpasses mainly in urban areas due to heavy rainfall. The bureau has urged farmers to make provision for draining excess water from crop fields to avoid water stagnation in places of heavy rainfall over the next few days.
As of Jul 29, the country has received 438.0 mm of rainfall, 2% below normal for the Jun 1-Jul 29 period, IMD data showed. End
