--IMD: India Jun 1-Jul 29 rainfall at 438.0 mm, 2% above normal

MUMBAI – The weighted average rainfall across the country today was 7.9 mm, 16% below the normal of 9.4 mm for the day, the India Meteorological Department said. Since Jun 1, India has received 438.0 mm of rainfall, 2% above the normal of 428.3 mm for the period, the weather bureau said.

Three of the four homogeneous regions in the country received below normal showers, while one received above normal rainfall. Rainfall was 50% below normal at 6.8 mm in east and northeast India, 43% below normal at 4.3 mm in northwest India, and 22% below normal at 5.3 mm in south peninsula. Rainfall was 23% above normal in central India at 13.1 mm.

The weather bureau said the southwest monsoon trough is active and is likely to shift gradually northwards during the next four to five days, which is expected to bring widespread rainfall over most of the northwestern states.

Very heavy rainfall is likely over Uttarakhand till Friday. Haryana, Chandigarh, west Uttar Pradesh and west Rajasthan will likely receive very heavy rainfall on Wednesday.

So far during the season, rainfall has been normal in 14 of the 36 sub-divisions in the country. Rainfall was "excess" in 13, and "deficient" in nine sub-divisions. End
