NEW DELHI – Rainfall activity will likely increase over northwest India for the next four to five days as active monsoon conditions are expected over most parts of the region, the India Meteorological Department said.

The weather bureau said the southwest monsoon trough is active and is likely to shift gradually northwards during the next four to five days, which is expected to bring widespread rainfall over most of the northwestern states. Several places in northwest India have been issued orange alerts for heavy rainfall today.

Very heavy rainfall is likely over east Rajasthan today, while Uttarakhand is expected to receive very heavy rains till Friday. Haryana, Chandigarh, west Uttar Pradesh and west Rajasthan will likely receive very heavy rainfall on Wednesday.

Additionally, widespread rainfall is likely over Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and west Rajasthan during the next five days, the IMD said. The forecast of heavy rainfall is likely to bring the much-needed precipitation to northern parts of the country. The monsoon rainfall in the region has been poor so far, with the deficit since Jun 1 currently at 16%, IMD data showed.

Rainfall over Haryana, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh is currently significantly below normal since the monsoon season started on Jun 1.

The IMD has also issued orange alerts for interior parts of Gujarat today, and Saurashtra and Kutch till Tuesday. Parts of western and central India, including Konkan, Goa, Madhya Pradesh, ghat areas of central Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh are also expected to receive heavy rainfall over the next three to four days.

In the southern peninsula, very heavy rainfall is likely over some parts of Kerala and Mahe today, and coastal and south interior Karnataka till Tuesday. Over the eastern region, widespread rainfall is expected over most parts during the next five days.

The IMD has warned against localised flooding of roads, water logging in low-lying areas and closure of underpasses mainly in urban areas of the above-mentioned regions. Damage to horticulture and standing crops in some areas of northwest, central and east India has been projected as well due to inundation.

In places of heavy rainfall, the IMD has suggested farmers drain excess water from crop fields to avoid stagnation. It has also urged farmers to provide mechanical support to horticulture crops and staking to vegetables.  End
