NEW DELHI – The Centre has set the domestic sugar sales quota for August at 2.2 mln tn, down from 2.4 mln tn last month, the food and public distribution department said today in a post on social media platform X. The quota for August is down 8.3% on month and 6.4% on year. In August 2023, the quota was set at 2.35 mln tn.

The government fixes the maximum quantity of sugar available for sale every month to support prices and help mills clear the arrears of sugarcane farmers.

In addition, the government ordered sugar mills to strictly comply with the stock holding norms. "...it has been observed that some groups/individual sugar mills have not been maintaining the stock holding limit as specified vide monthly stockholding limit orders issued by Directorate, despite repeated directions," food department said in a notification today.

As per the Sugar (Control) Order 1966 and Essential Commodities Act 1955, the government imposes stock holding limits to prevent market distortions and ensure the availability of the sweetener in the country at affordable prices. Against non-complaint mills, the government can take a slew of measures, including deducting sales quotas or denying quotas altogether, the notification said.

From August, mills that violate stock holding limits more than thrice, will not benefit from any schemes, including export quotas when issued. "No benefit under any scheme...including export quota, as & when issued, shall be granted to the group/individual sugar mill which violates the stockholding limits orders more than three times, for one year starting from the month of third instance. This provision will be applicable from August 2024 onwards," the notification said.

The deducted quotas of non-complaint mills will be distributed among the other compliant mills while issuing the monthly stock holding orders, it added.  End
