MUMBAI – The weighted average rainfall across the country today was 10.3 mm, 8% above the normal of 9.5 mm for the day, the India Meteorological Department said. Since Jun 1, India has received 409.4 mm rainfall, 3% above the normal of 399.2 mm for the period, the weather bureau said.
Two homogeneous regions in the country received above normal showers, while two received below normal rainfall. Rainfall was 63% below normal at 4.7 mm in east and northeast India and 7% below normal at 7.1 mm in northwest India. Rainfall was 44% above normal in central India at 16.2 mm and 41% above normal at 9.8 mm in the south peninsula.
The IMD has forecast extremely heavy rainfall over ghat areas of central Maharashtra till Saturday. The weather bureau said very heavy rainfall is likely over some parts of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh till Saturday, east Rajasthan till Sunday, and over Uttarakhand on Saturday and Monday. Parts of coastal and south interior Karnataka are also likely to receive very heavy rainfall till Saturday, it said.
The weather bureau also predicts very heavy rainfall to continue over central India in the next two days.
So far during the season, rainfall has been normal in 15 of the 36 sub-divisions in the country. Rainfall was "large excess" in two, "excess" in 11, and "deficient" in eight sub-divisions. End
