NEW DELHI – Lok Sabha today witnessed two short adjournments due to a war of words between the Opposition and treasury benches during the discussion on the Union Budget 2024-25 (Apr-Mar). The Lower House was discussing the Budget for the second day.
Congress member and former Punjab chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi was the first speaker today. He slammed the Budget for ignoring the farmers’ demands and also attacked the Centre for not giving a legal guarantee on minimum support price. He alleged that the government had given a written assurance to farmers on MSP.
His remarks brought sharp reaction from treasury benches with Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal refuting Channi's claim of written assurance on bringing a law on MSP and asking him to authenticate his claim. Channi also said that there was an undeclared emergency in the country.
Channi referred to the assassination of Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu's grandfather and former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh. Channi said that Beant Singh did not die in 1984, but he actually died when Bittu left the Congress and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. The remarks saw a verbal spat between the Opposition and treasury benches leading to adjournment of proceedings till 1400 IST.
After the House reassembled, the proceedings were disrupted when Nationalist Congress Party member Sunil Dattatray Tatkare was speaking on the Budget. The House was then adjourned till 1500 IST.
In the Rajya Sabha, Aam Aadmi Party member Raghav Chadha raised the issue of high taxes. The government has displeased all the sections of the society, he said. "We in India today pay taxes like those in England to get services like Somalia," Chadha said. He also alleged that food inflation has been constantly increasing in the country and prices of food products are sky-rocketing.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will give her reply on Budget on Tuesday and after that both the Houses will hold discussions on Demands for Grants for various ministries. End
