NEW DELHI – The Supreme Court has sought the Centre's response in four weeks on all the policy decisions taken by them from time to time to promote electric vehicles. The top court also sought the assistance of Attorney General of India R. Venkataramani in the case and listed it for hearing on Sep 23.
The top court was hearing a public interest litigation by the Centre for Public Interest Litigation, Common Cause, and other parties, seeking promotion and implementation of electric vehicle policies. The petitioners had said that fundamental rights of citizens to health and clean environment were being violated due to the government's inaction in mitigating the impact of climate change and air pollution. These were partly due to emissions from fossil fuel-powered vehicles.
While hearing the case in 2020, the top court had noted that the issues which pertained to the source of power of vehicles, public and private, eventually have a great impact on the environment not only of the national capital region but also the country as a whole. "We consider it appropriate that all these issues be considered simultaneously and with the assistance of an authority empowered to take decisions," the top court had said. The apex court had asked the stakeholders to assist on points involving procurement of electric vehicles, providing charging ports, imposing fees on vehicles with high emissions, providing a subsidy on electric vehicles, the use of hydrogen vehicles and other things.
