MUMBAI – The weighted average rainfall across the country today was 12.9 mm, 37% above the normal of 9.4 mm for the day, the India Meteorological Department said. Since Jun 1, India has received 399.2 mm of rainfall, 2% above the normal of 389.7 mm for the period, the weather bureau said.
Two homogeneous regions in the country received above normal showers, while two received below normal rainfall. Rainfall was 54% below normal at 5.8 mm in east and northeast India and 24% below normal at 5.7 mm in northwest India. Rainfall was 131% above normal in central India at 25.2 mm and 21% above normal at 8.7 mm in the south peninsula.
The IMD has forecast extremely heavy rainfall over ghat areas of central Maharashtra till Saturday, Konkan and Goa from Saturday to Sunday, and Gujarat region from Friday to Saturday. The weather bureau also predicts very heavy rainfall over Uttarakhand on Friday and Saturday.
Very heavy rainfall is likely over parts of south interior Karnataka and coastal Karnataka till Saturday, while in north interior Karnataka, similar weather conditions are expected till Friday.
So far during the season, rainfall has been normal in 15 of the 36 sub-divisions in the country. Rainfall was "large excess" in two, "excess" in 11, and "deficient" in eight sub-divisions. End
