MUMBAI - The weighted average rainfall across the country today was 13.3 mm, 41% above the normal of 9.4 mm for the day, the India Meteorological Department said. Since Jun 1, India has received 385.3 mm of rainfall, 1% above the normal of 380.3 mm for the period, the weather bureau said.
Three of the four homogeneous regions in the country received below normal showers, while one received above normal rainfall. Rainfall was 50% below normal at 6.5 mm in east and northeast India, 7% below normal at 7.2 mm in the south peninsula, and 38% below normal at 4.3 mm in northwest India. Rainfall was 159% above normal in central India at 28.2 mm.
The IMD has forecast extremely heavy rainfall over central Maharashtra and parts of Gujarat till Thursday. The weather bureau said exceptionally heavy rainfall is likely over Gujarat today under the influence of a cyclonic circulation that lies over the state. Parts of Konkan and Goa are also likely to receive extremely heavy rainfall today, it said.
Very heavy rainfall is also likely over parts of west Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan today, according to the weather bureau. Some parts of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Rajasthan are likely to receive very heavy rainfall from Wednesday to Sunday. Similar weather conditions are likely over Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh, and southeast Uttar Pradesh till Thursday, and over west Uttar Pradesh till Saturday, it said.
So far during the season, rainfall has been normal in 14 of the 36 subdivisions in the country. Rainfall was "large excess" in two, "excess" in 11, and "deficient" in nine sub-divisions.
