India crude steel output up 6% on year in June, says World Steel Association

MUMBAI – Production of crude steel in India rose 6% on year to 12.3 mln tn in June, according to data from the World Steel Association. The country accounted for nearly 7.6% of global steel output last month.

 

Global crude steel output was up 0.5% on year at 161.4 mln tn last month because of a rise in output in Brazil, China, Germany, India, and Turkiye. For Jan-Jun, global crude steel production was flat at 954.6 mln tn, while output in India jumped 7.4% to 74.2 mln tn.

 

Among the top 10 steel producers, Germany, Iran, Japan, Russia, South Korea, and the US reported negative growth in output for June. In China, the world's largest producer, crude steel output rose 0.2% on year to 91.6 mln tn last month. For Jan-Jun, the country's output declined 1.1% on year to 530.6 mln tn, accounting for over 55% of global production.

 

In Japan, crude steel output was down 4.2% on year to 7 mln tn. Production in South Korea plunged 7.2% to 5.1 mln tn in June. The US produced 6.7 mln tn steel last month, down 1.5% on year, while output in Turkiye rose 4.3% to 3.1 mln tn.

 

Steel production in Germany climbed 8.9% to 3.2 mln tn in June. Crude steel production in Russia is estimated to have decreased 4.1% on year to 6 mln tn. Overall production in Brazil is estimated to have soared 11.8% to 2.9 mln tn, while output in Iran tumbled 8.5% to 3.1 mln tn last month. End
