NEW DELHI – Dissatisfied over the budgetary allocations to their states, the chief ministers of Congress-, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam- and the Communist Party of India (Marxist)-ruled states would boycott the NITI Aayog Governing Council meeting on Saturday. The meeting will be chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin said that the Union Budget ignored the southern state. He announced that he will boycott the meeting. "While the Budget includes announcements for states ruled by the Bharatiya Janata Party allies, there is no guarantee these states will receive the promised funds, just as Tamil Nadu has been denied funds for the Chennai Metro for the past three years. Shockingly, the words 'Tamil' or 'Tamil Nadu' do not appear even once in the entire speech," Stalin said in a post on X.
Sources said that the chief ministers of Congress-ruled states of Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka and Telangana would also not attend the meeting on Saturday. Sources further said that the chief ministers of Opposition-governed Kerala and Jharkhand would also be boycotting the meeting in protest over the Budget.
However, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will attend the meeting. Trinamool Congress leader Derek O'Brien said that Banerjee will attend the NITI Aayog meeting.
The NITI Aayog will hold the ninth meeting of its governing council on Saturday during which it will discuss the Vision Document on becoming 'Viksit Bharat' by 2047. At the meeting, which will be chaired by Modi, the think-tank's apex body will also deliberate on issues of ease of living such as drinking water, electricity, health, and schooling.
The governing council comprises chief ministers of all states and Union territories with legislatures and lieutenant governors of other Union territories. The council, which was formed in February 2015, last met on May 27, 2023. NITI Aayog was set up in 2015 as a government think-tank, replacing the Planning Commission. The prime minister is the chairman of the body. End
