NEW DELHI – The government today said it will provide assistance to Bihar, Assam, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Sikkim for flood management and related projects as these states frequently suffer from floods, some of them originating outside the country.

The government plans to provide financial support to Bihar for projects with an estimated cost of 115 bln rupees through the accelerated irrigation benefit programme and other sources, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said while presenting the Union Budget for 2024-25 (Apr-Mar) today. The projects include the Kosi-Mechi intra-state link and 20 other ongoing and new schemes such as barrages, river pollution abatement and irrigation projects. "In addition, survey and investigation of Kosi related flood mitigation and irrigation projects will be undertaken," Sitharaman said.

Sitharaman said Assam and Himachal Pradesh suffer from floods every year, and the government will provide assistance to these two states for flood management and related projects. For Himachal Pradesh, Sitharaman further said the Centre will provide aid for reconstruction and rehabilitation through multilateral development assistance.

Uttarakhand and Sikkim will also be given aid for landslides and floods as both states have suffered losses over the past one year.  End
