--BUDGET: Nuclear energy to be key for energy mix under Viksit Bharat

HYDERABAD – The government will partner with the private sector in the nuclear energy space, extending funding support for research and development, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said today. Nuclear energy is expected to form a very significant part of the energy mix to achieve Viksit Bharat, she said in the Budget speech. 

The private sector partnership is aimed at setting up Bharat Small Reactors, conducting R&D of Bharat Small Modular Reactors, and developing newer technologies for nuclear energy. In its Interim Budget, the government announced 1 trln rupees of funding for R&D and nuclear energy research-related projects, which will be provided from that fund, the minister said. 

In a General Election year, the incumbent government presents an Interim Budget in Parliament. Prime Minister Narendra Modi government presented the Interim Budget for 2024-25 on Feb 1. The Modi government returned to power with a reduced majority in the recently held General Election. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who retained her portfolio, presented the full Budget for 2024-25 (Apr-Mar) today.  End
