FY25 MGNREGA allocation pegged at 860 bln rupees, unchanged on year

--BUDGET: FY25 MGNREGA outlay 860 bln rupees, unch from interim Budget
MUMBAI – The government today kept the allocation for the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme at 860 bln rupees for the current financial year, unchanged from the revised estimate in 2023-24 (Apr-Mar), according to the Budget for 2024-25 presented in Parliament today.
The Interim Budget, presented on Feb 1, kept the allocation for 2024-25 at 860 bln rupees.
The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, which was launched in 2006, provides at least 100 days of guaranteed employment a year to every rural household whose adult members volunteer for unskilled manual work. It is a demand-driven programme, and the government has to mandatorily provide funds in case of demand for work.
According to the Ministry of Rural Development, the flagship programme has provided 30.82 average days of employment per household so far in 2024-25, down from 52.09 average days of employment in 2023-24. The average wage rate per day per person is 240.94 rupees, up from 235.62 rupees in the previous fiscal year.
So far in the current financial year, 374.07 bln rupees have been spent on the programme. End
