NEW DELHI - The Business Advisory Committee of the Lok Sabha today decided to allocate 20 hours for discussion on the Budget, which will be presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in Parliament on Tuesday.

The committee, under the Chairmanship of Speaker Om Birla, held a meeting today to decide on the business for the first week of the Monsoon Session. According to sources, there were differences over the allocation of 20 hours for the Budget discussion between the government and the Bharatiya Janata Party members. Sources said that BJP members wanted around 12 hours, while the Opposition had demanded 30 hours for discussion on the Budget.

The government was also reluctant to hold discussion on Demands for Grants for the Ministry of Education. According to an Opposition member, Opposition parties demanded a discussion on Demands for Grants for the Ministry of Railways and Ministry of Education. However, the government was ready to hold discussion on the Demands of Grants for the Ministry of Railways but was reluctant in the case of the education ministry.

The ruling faction proposed discussion on the Demands for Grants for the AYUSH ministry, micro, small and medium enterprises ministry, health ministry, and agriculture ministry, a Business Advisory Committee member said.

On the first day of the session, Opposition parties cornered the government over the irregularities in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for the undergraduate medical programmes. Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi termed the examination system a "fraud".

"It is obvious to whole country that there is a serious problem with our examination system. The minister (Dharmendra Pradhan) has shifted the blame onto others and seems to lack a fundamental understanding of the issue. Millions of people believe that if you're rich then you can buy the Indian examination system," Gandhi said.

The Opposition also demanded the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over his alleged failure in tackling the paper leaks. Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav said that if Pradhan continues as the education minister, students will never get justice.

Meanwhile, Pradhan said in the Lower House that no evidence of paper leaks has been found in the past seven years. "The current case is before the Supreme Court. I can confidently say that more than 240 exams have been successfully conducted by the National Testing Agency since its inception. Out of 4,700 centres, only at one place around Patna there was an incident of anomaly. The Central Bureau of Investigation and Bihar police investigating it," Pradhan said.  End
