--EconSurvey: Demand for more focussed skills in services sector jobs

NEW DELHI – The private sector and academic institutions must collaborate to upskill people to catch up with and then get ahead of technological evolution, and to create more jobs, according to the Economic Survey 2023-24 (Apr-Mar).

The survey mentioned that it is in the interest of the private sector of India to take up the responsibility of creating jobs seriously. For this, the private sector must find people with the right attitude and skills, it said.

"A corporate sector that helps shape the design of higher education with inputs to curriculum, evaluation standards, and faculty will pave the way for a high-quality higher education that market competition brings, replacing regulatory oversight."

The survey said India plans to create millions of jobs by 2030. Furthermore, the emerging demand for jobs in the services sector entails greater and more focussed skills, it said.

There is an increasing focus on cognitive abilities, digital literacy, and proficiency in artificial intelligence and big data. "This shift underscores the strategic imperative for businesses and the workforce to adapt to technological advancements and meet global market demands," according to the survey.

The immediate task of the skilling programme in India is to plan and equip itself to meet the requirements adequately, the survey said. "This only underscores the importance of the relatively less skill-dependent tourism sector for employment generation," according to the survey. "Therefore, public policy should pay particular attention to boosting the tourism sector."  End
