MUMBAI – The weighted average rainfall across the country today was 12.0 mm, 22% above the normal of 9.8 mm for the day, the India Meteorological Department said. Since Jun 1, India has received 359.3 mm of rainfall, 1% below the normal of 361.5 mm for the period, the weather bureau said.
Two of the four homogeneous regions in the country received below normal showers, while the other two received above normal rainfall. Rainfall was 20% below normal at 11.1 mm in east and northeast India and 51% below normal at 3.8 mm in northwest India. Rainfall was 80% above normal at 21.2 mm in central India, while it was 46% above normal in the south peninsula at 9.7 mm.
So far during the season, rainfall has been normal in 14 of the 36 subdivisions in the country. Rainfall was 'large excess' in three, 'excess' in ten, and 'deficient' in nine subdivisions.
The department today forecast extremely heavy rainfall over Gujarat state, Konkan, Goa, and madhya Maharashtra till Wednesday. Similar rainfall activity may be seen in west Madhya Pradesh today, the weather bureau said.
Very heavy rainfall is likely over parts of Madhya Pradesh and Odisha till Wednesday and over Gujarat on Thursday and Friday. Very heavy rainfall is also likely over Uttarakhand till Tuesday. Similar rainfall intensity will be seen over west Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana on Tuesday and over east Rajasthan on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms is very likely over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, east Rajasthan, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and east Uttar Pradesh over the next five days. Scattered rainfall is expected over Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, and west Rajasthan during the same period, the agency said.
Light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is likely over northeast India during the next five days. Heavy rainfall is very likely over parts of Assam and Meghalaya during the next five days and over Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and Manipur till Wednesday, the agency said. End
