--IMD: India Jun 1-Jul 19 rainfall 324.4 mm, 2% below normal 

 

MUMBAI – The weighted average rainfall across the country today was 11.3 mm, 20% above the normal of 9.4 mm for the day, the India Meteorological Department said. Since Jun 1, India has received 324.4 mm of rainfall, 2% below the normal of 332.5 mm for the period, the weather bureau said.

 

Two of four homogenous regions in the country received below normal showers, while two received above normal rainfall. Rainfall was 80% below normal at 2.9 mm in east and northeast India and 22% below normal at 5.6 mm in northwest India. The rainfall was 34% above normal at 14.3 mm in central India, while it was 245% above normal in the south peninsula at 21.7 mm.

 

So far during the season, the rainfall has been normal in 13 of the 36 sub-divisions in the country. The rainfall was 'large excess' in two, 'excess' in ten, and 'deficient' in 11 sub-divisions.

 

India Meteorological Department today forecast extremely heavy rainfall over Konkan, which includes Mumbai, and Goa till Saturday. Similar conditions are forecast over Madhya Maharashtra, Telangana, parts of Karnataka, and Vidarbha during the same time, the weather bureau said.

 

Gujarat is likely to receive extremely heavy showers today and Sunday, the weather agency said. Similar weather is likely over Saurashtra and Kutch on Monday, over south Odisha, south Chhattisgarh, coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam today, the weather agency said.

 

The places where extremely heavy rainfall is predicted could be subject to localised flooding of roads, water-logging in low-lying areas and closure of underpasses mainly in urban areas of these regions, the weather bureau said.

 

Heavy to very rainfall is likely in a few places over Kerala, Mahe and Telangana till Sunday, and over Tamil Nadu till Saturday, the weather agency said. Similar weather is likely to prevail over Odisha, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, and Marathwada on Saturday, while Madhya Pradesh could experience similar weather conditions from Saturday to Tuesday, it said.

 

Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam are likely to receive heavy to very heavy showers till Saturday, the agency said. Konkan, Goa, madhya Maharashtra, Gujarat, and parts of Karnataka are also forecast to receive similar weather during the next five days, the weather department said. 

 

Very heavy rainfall is likely over east Rajasthan on Sunday, over Himachal Pradesh on Monday and Tuesday, and over Uttarakhand during Sat-Mon, the agency said. IMD has advised fishermen not to venture into northwest and adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal and along and off north Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh coasts till Saturday.  End
