India's May tur imports rise 57% on year to 60,272 tn

MUMBAI – India’s tur, or pigeon peas, imports in May rose 57.4% from a year ago to 60,271.58 tn, led by higher imports from Mozambique and Sudan. The country imported 38,287.72 tn of tur in May last year, according to data analysed from the commerce and industry ministry.
The imports from Mozambique jumped 253.6% on year to 14,994.75 tn in May, while imports from Sudan rose 63.4% on year to 18,020.71 tn. Imports from Kenya grew 234.7% on year to 1,767 tn and Nigeria emerged as a major exporter of the pulse to India, supplying 2,007.28 tn in May, the data showed.
Myanmar was the top exporter of the pulse to India in May, shipping 18,450 tn, up 6.8% from a year ago. India imported tur from Malawi and Uganda also in May. The number of countries exporting tur to India rose to 10 in May against eight last year.
The value of tur imported in May was $78.85 mln, up 112.7% on year from $36.13 mln a year ago. The cost of imports per tn rose 35.1% on year to $1,275.06 in May compared to $943.64 a year ago.
India's tur imports in Jan-May declined 30.3% on year to 265,709.24 tn from 381,093.70 tn a year ago due to a decline in imports from Myanmar, Mozambique and Sudan.
In the ongoing kharif season, farmers across the country have sown tur in 2.81 mln ha as of Jul 15, up 191% from a year ago, data from the farm ministry showed. The normal area for tur for the kharif season is 4.56 mln ha.
As of Jul 18, the shipment price of the lemon variety of pigeon peas from Myanmar to India fell by $5 per tn to $1,390 per tn from a week ago, data from Global Pulse Confederation showed. The shipment price of arusha variety of pigeon peas from Tanzania was unchanged from a week ago at $1,200 per tn.
Domestic tur prices rose on Thursday as demand is anticipated to grow from late July to early August, the India Pulses and Grains Association said. Tur prices in the key wholesale market of Hinganghat rose by 100 rupees per 100 kg to 10,200-11,590 rupees per 100 kg on Thursday. End
