MUMBAI - The weighted average rainfall across the country today was 7.9 mm, 14% below the normal of 9.2 mm for the day, the India Meteorological Department said. Since Jun 1, India has received 313.1 mm of rainfall, 3% below the normal of 323.1 mm for the period, the weather bureau said.

 

Three of four homogenous regions in the country received below normal showers today, while one received above normal rainfall. Rainfall was 62% below normal at 5.1 mm in east and northeast India and 27% below normal at 5.0 mm in northwest India. The rainfall was 13% below normal at 9.4 mm in central India, while it was 77% above normal in the south peninsula at 12.1 mm.

 

So far during the season, the rainfall has been normal in 17 of the 36 sub-divisions in the country. The rainfall was 'large excess' in two, 'excess' in seven, and 'deficient' in 10 sub-divisions.

 

The India Meteorological Department today forecast extremely heavy rainfall over coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Telangana till Friday. Vidarbha and south Chhattisgarh may also receive extremely heavy showers on Friday and Saturday, the weather agency said. Odisha may experience similar weather on Friday, the agency said. 

 

Extremely heavy rainfall is also likely over coastal Karnataka, south interior Karnataka, and Gujarat till Friday, the weather department said. Konkan and Goa are also likely to receive extremely heavy showers during the same period, the agency said, adding that madhya Maharashtra may get extremely heavy rainfall till Saturday. 

 

Heavy-to-very heavy rainfall is very likely over a few areas of Konkan, Goa, and madhya Maharashtra during the next five days, the weather agency said. Parts of Karnataka and Gujarat may also receive similar rainfall during the same time.

 

Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam may also receive very heavy rains till Saturday, the weather bureau said. Similar weather is also expected over Telangana till Sunday, and Tamil Nadu till Friday, it said. 

 

Very heavy showers are likely over Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh today, over Odisha today and Saturday, and over Marathwada on Saturday, the department said. Parts of Madhya Pradesh are likely to receive very heavy rainfall till Monday, it said. 

Very heavy rainfall is predicted over Himachal Pradesh on Sunday, the agency said. Uttarakhand may receive similar rainfall on Sunday and Monday.  End
