Justices N Kotiswar Singh, R Mahadevan sworn in as SC judges

NEW DELHI – Former chief justice of Jammu and Kashmir High Court N. Kotiswar Singh and former acting chief justice of Madras High Court R. Mahadevan were sworn in as judges of the Supreme Court today. The apex court will now work with its full strength of 34 judges.
Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud administered the oath of office to the two judges today. On Tuesday, the government had cleared their names after the apex court collegium's recommendation on Jul 11.
The vacancies in the top court had arisen after the retirement of Justice Aniruddha Bose and Justice A.S. Bopanna on Apr 10 and May 19, respectively. The collegium consists of Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Justice B.R. Gavai, Justice Surya Kant, and Justice Hrishikesh Roy.
Singh, originally hailing from Manipur, was appointed as a judge of the Gauhati High Court in 2011. Thereafter, he was appointed as the chief justice of Jammu and Kashmir High Court in 2023. He is due to retire on Feb 28, 2025. The collegium said that Singh's appointment as a judge of the top court would provide representation to the northeast. In particular, he will be the first judge from Manipur to be appointed to the position.
Justice Mahadevan belongs to a backward community from Tamil Nadu, the collegium said, adding that his appointment would bring back diversity to the bench. End
