NEW DELHI - Indian telecom operators net added 2.00 mln new wireless telecom subscribers in May, higher than the 1.47 mln mobile subscribers added in April, according to data from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India. Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio Infocomm both reported user additions in May, while the third-largest player, Vodafone Idea, continued to lose customers.

 

Reliance Jio Infocomm, India's largest mobile telecom operator, net added 2.20 mln users in May, lower than the 2.69 mln users it added in the previous month. Bharti Airtel net added 1.25 mln users in May, higher than the 752,742 users it added the previous month. Vodafone Idea net lost 924,797 customers in May as compared to a net loss of 735,388 users in April.

 

The government-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd net lost 512,644 users in May, much lower than 1.23 mln subscribers it lost in April.

 

Reliance Jio Infocomm had 40.60% share of the wireless telecom market, in terms of the number of subscribers. Bharti Airtel followed with a market share of 33.17%, while Vodafone Idea's market share in May was 18.66%. Private players controlled 92.44% of the market in May, while the rest was serviced by government-owned players, namely BSNL and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd.
