Govt appoints Justices N Kotiswar Singh, R Mahadevan as SC judges

NEW DELHI – The government today cleared the names of Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir High Court N. Kotiswar Singh and acting Chief Justice of Madras High Court R. Mahadevan for appointment to the apex court. Once the two judges are sworn in, the apex court will work with its full strength of 34 judges.
On Thursday, the Supreme Court Collegium had recommended the names of the judges after the retirement of Justice Aniruddha Bose and Justice A.S. Bopanna on Apr 10 and May 19, respectively. The collegium consists of Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Justice B.R. Gavai, Justice Surya Kant, and Justice Hrishikesh Roy.
Singh, originally hailing from Manipur, was appointed as a judge of the Gauhati High Court in 2011. Thereafter, he was appointed as the chief justice of Jammu and Kashmir High Court in 2023. He is due to retire on Feb 28, 2025.
The collegium said that Singh's appointment as a judge of the top court would provide representation to the Northeast. In particular, he will be the first judge from Manipur to be appointed to the position. Justice Mahadevan belongs to a backward community from Tamil Nadu, the collegium said, adding that his appointment would bring back diversity to the bench. End
