NEW DELHI – Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) Chairman K.P. Sharma Oli today took oath as the prime minister of Nepal for the third time after his party stitched up an alliance with the Nepali Congress to secure a majority in the House of Representatives. His predecessor Pushpa Kamal Dahal's government had lost the trust vote in the House of Representatives on Friday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge congratulated Oli for taking over as the prime minister of the Himalayan nation. Oli served as Nepal's Prime Minister between 2015 and 2016 and from 2018 to 2021. Modi said he looked forward to working closely with Oil to strengthen the ties between the two countries.

In his past two tenures, Oli took a hardline stand against India over border and trade issues and pursued closer relations with China. In 2019, Oli claimed that disputed areas of Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura were part of Nepal. He had also blamed India for interference during the 2015 Nepal blockade.

However, experts said that both nations have learnt their lessons. "The politics in Nepal is going through turmoil. For Oli to stay longer in power, he will have to maintain better relations with major world powers like India, China and even the US," said Swaran Singh, a professor of diplomacy and disarmament at Jawaharlal Nehru University. Oli will be relatively more cautious on the foreign policy aspect, Singh said.

The Dahal government fell on Friday after the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) withdrew support. The Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) has joined hands with the Nepali Congress, the country's largest party, to form a new alliance. The combined strength of the new alliance in the House of Representatives is 165, while the majority mark is 138.  End
