India's non-basmati rice exports fall 13.4% to $919 mln in Apr-May

MUMBAI – India's non-basmati rice exports during Apr-May fell 13.4% to $919 mln, according to data collated by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority from the Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics. In volume terms, non-basmati rice exports declined to 1.93 mln tn during Apr-May from 2.84 mln tn a year ago, the data showed.

India banned exports of non-basmati white rice in July due to concerns over rising domestic prices. The government, however, allowed exports of white rice to meet the food security needs of some countries based on requests.


In May, basmati rice exports rose 13.1% on year to $1.03 bln. In terms of volume, these exports rose 16.2% to 965,128 tn, the data showed.

In value terms, basmati accounted for nearly 24% of the total exports of agricultural products from India, while non-basmati rice accounted for nearly 21.2%. Total exports of farm products and processed foods fell 0.5% on year to $4.33 bln in Apr-May from $4.35 bln a year earlier.

Exports of buffalo meat rose 5.4% to $552 mln during the first two months of 2024-25 (Apr-Mar), while exports of processed fruits and vegetables rose 12.9% to $410 mln. Exports of pulses fell 4.5% on year to $144 mln, while groundnut exports fell 16.1% to $137 mln. Exports of guar gum rose 41.2% to $106 mln.
