MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall over parts of Uttarakhand, west Uttar Pradesh, and west Madhya Pradesh for today. These weather conditions are mainly due to the influence of a depression over southwest Uttar Pradesh, the weather agency said.

A red alert indicates rainfall of over 204.4 mm in 24 hours. Extremely heavy rainfall is likely to continue over Uttarakhand till Friday, the weather office said.

The department has also issued an orange alert for very heavy rainfall over Haryana, Delhi, Chandigarh, east Uttar Pradesh, east Rajasthan, and parts of northeast India for today. An orange alert is for rainfall of 115.6-204.4 mm. Similar weather conditions are very likely over parts of west Uttar Pradesh till Friday, the agency said.

The depression over southwest Uttar Pradesh is likely to continue to move towards the north-northeast today and will weaken from Friday, the weather department said. The monsoon trough is near normal position at mean sea level, it said.

Under the influence of an upper air cyclonic circulation over southeast Bangladesh, a low pressure area is likely to form over coastal Bangladesh and the north Bay of Bengal in the next 24 hours, according to the forecaster. The weather system is likely to concentrate into a depression over coastal West Bengal and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal during the subsequent 48 hours, it said.

In view of extremely heavy rainfall, the agency said there is a risk of moderate to high flash floods in Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, west Uttar Pradesh, east Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and east Rajasthan during the next 24 hours. Surface runoff or inundation may occur in some fully saturated soils and low-lying areas over the next 24 hours, it said.

The bureau has urged farmers to make provision to drain excess water from fields to avoid waterlogging in places of heavy rainfall over the next few days. It has also asked farmers to keep the harvested produce in a safe place.

Moving towards central India, the department has predicted very heavy rainfall over parts of west Madhya Pradesh today and heavy showers over the same part during the next few days.

Strong winds with speeds of 35-45 kmph and gusting up to 55 kmph are likely to prevail over southwest Uttar Pradesh, adjoining areas of northwest Madhya Pradesh, northeast Rajasthan, and south Haryana during the next 24 hours, it said.

During the last 24 hours, a few parts of Madhya Pradesh received exceptionally heavy rainfall and parts of east Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and west Uttar Pradesh received extremely heavy to very heavy showers, the weather bureau said. End
