India pulses body sees Canada 2024 yellow pea output rising 17%

Informist, Monday, Aug 12, 2024

MUMBAI - Yellow pea production from Canada is likely to rise 17.2% to 2.65 mln tn in 2024 from 2.26 mln tn last year, the India Pulses and Grains Association said. "This means supplies in 2024-25 season will be larger than last year but not historically high," the association said.

India is one of the key markets for yellow pea exports for Canada with India's imports standing at $297.67 mln in 2023-24. As per the latest data from the commerce ministry, India has already imported yellow peas worth $116.98 mln from Canada in the first two months of 2024-25 (Apr-Mar). India's total imports of yellow peas stood at $575.42 mln last year and at $332.91 mln in Apr-May.

India's imports of the pulse have risen since December when India allowed duty-free imports of the commodity till October this year. An import duty of 50% on yellow peas was first introduced in November 2017, which brought down imports of the commodity to a standstill, data from the commerce ministry showed.

India's consumption of pulses has been increasing, and is estimated to rise to 40 mln tn by 2030 from 24-25 mln tn currently, Ashok Gulati, chair professor for agriculture at the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations said at a seminar last week.

India has had to import pulses even though India's production has risen over the years to almost 25 mln tn in 2023-24 from 16.32 mt during 2015-16. The reason for this has been a higher contribution of chana and moong to the pulses basket and a lower share of tur, urad, and masur, which has prompted the government to import these in large quantities.
