Aluminium Institute says global output fell 0.1% on month in August

MUMBAI – Global production of primary aluminium fell marginally month-on-month by 0.1% to 6.18 mln tn in August, according to data from the International Aluminium Institute. Year-on-year, production was up 1.2% from 6.11 mln tn a year ago. Global daily average aluminium production fell to 199,322 tn in August from a revised figure of 199,516 tn for July.

In China, aluminium production was steady at 3.69 mln tn in August, the data showed. The country accounts for over 59% of global production of the metal. Daily average aluminium production in China fell slightly to 119,032 tn last month from 119,064 tn in July.

In Asia, excluding China, production rose to 408,000 tn in August from 407,000 tn in July. In Africa, the output in August was flat at 135,000 tn.

In the Gulf Cooperation Council, the other major producing region after China, aluminium production rose by just 1,000 tn to 531,000 tn in August.

In western and central Europe, production rose to 243,000 last month from 242,000 tn in July. The output of metals in North America fell by 1,000 tn to 333,000 tn in August, and in South America, it was unchanged at 130,000 tn.

In July, global alumina production rose 0.9% on month to 12.16 mln tn, as per the latest available data.

At 1923 IST, the most active September contract of aluminium on the Multi Commodity Exchange of India was up 0.6% at 228.30 rupees a kg. The three-month futures contract on the London Metal Exchange was up 0.2% at $2,480.0 per tn. End
