MUMBAI – Maize and rice prices showed mixed trends Friday while those of wheat were steady across key spot markets in the country. Maize prices rose in Nizamabad, Telangana, due to lack of arrivals while being steady in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, and Purnia in Bihar. Prices of rice fell in Delhi after bulk buying from traders slowed down, but prices were steady in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, due to steady demand and supply. Wheat prices steadied after rising in the last few days. However, traders expect prices to rise further.

WHEAT prices were steady in Indore at INR 3,060 per 100 kilograms, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Prices were also steady in Kota, Rajasthan, at INR 2,900-INR 2,950 per 100 kg and in Vashi at INR 3,250 per 100 kg. However, traders believe this is a short respite before prices begin rallying again, said Kochar. So far, major wheat producing states have not received adequate rainfall to prepare the soil for sowing, he added. This has made traders apprehensive about the quality and quantity of future arrivals from the rabi harvest.

"Currently the OMSS (open market sales scheme) is meeting the demand of flour mills. Flour mills generally don't care about the quality of wheat since all of it has to be ground to a powder anyway," Ravi Mehta, a trader from Kota, said. He added that retail prices may not be affected in the near term, since flour mills are buying cheaply-priced broken wheat from the government's sales. Nonetheless, traders are continuing to keep an eye on the weather for future market cues.

MAIZE prices in Nizamabad rose by INR 25 to INR 2,800 per 100 kg, said trader Jairam. "There haven't been many arrivals in the last few days and demand from ethanol producers, starch manufacturers, and the poultry feed industry has been strong...I expect prices to soon touch and cross the INR 3,000 mark. It has already crossed that threshold in Maharashtra, it's only a matter of time for the rest of the Indian markets to catch up," he said.

But prices were steady in Indore at INR 2,600 per 100 kg due to healthy arrivals in the market, Kochar said. In Purnia, too, prices were steady at INR 2,640-INR 2,775 per 100 kg, said Kanhaiya Rastogi, a local trader. "We have had strong demand from neighbouring states and from exporters...today, demand has eased a bit but we don't expect this to hold for long," he said.

RICE prices fell INR 100 in Delhi, Ashok Jindal, a wholesale trader, said. Prices of the 1401 Basmati variety fell to INR 10,300-INR 10,400 per 100 kg, while those of the 1509 variety fell to INR 8,900-INR 9,000. "A lot of the bulk buying that traders were doing in the last few days slowed down yesterday, which had a ripple effect on prices today. However, we don't know how long this slowdown will last and when buying will pick up pace again," Jindal said. He added that traders in Delhi expect good productivity from the kharif crop and prices could fall further once arrivals begin in November.

Prices in Vashi were steady on stable demand and supply of the staple grain, Devendra Vora, a wholesale trader, said. Prices of the 1401 variety remained at INR 9,600-INR 9,700 per 100 kg, while those of the 1509 variety were at INR 8,500 per 100 kg, and those of the 1121 variety were at INR 10,000-INR 10,200 per 100 kg, said Vora.  End
