MUMBAI – Prices of urad in the near-term are likely to be range-bound, the India Pulses and Grains Association said in its weekly report Monday. The supply outlook looks comfortable as ample stocks from Myanmar and Brazil are likely to offset tightness in India due to monsoon-related concerns, which could keep prices largely stable, the association said.
Availability of supreme quality urad from Myanmar remains limited due to high price disparity, although supply from Brazil was available in August and September. Around 3,000 full container loads of urad from Brazil are expected to arrive in October as delayed shipments are likely to reach India soon, the association added.
Myanmar is estimated to hold around 300,500-400,000 tonnes of old urad crop. Sellers in the country are holding freight on board offers of around $940-$950 per tonne, but they may need to sell old stock soon to make space for the new crop, the report added. In the week ended Saturday, Myanmar-origin urad prices strengthened across major domestic markets. Brazil-origin urad prices remained stable as imports continued and millers from South India preferred Brazil urad at lower price levels as an alternative to urad from Myanmar.
In India, increased sowing in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan raised hopes of a better production outlook. Although continuous rain during harvesting raised concerns over crop damage, quality, and yields, the report said. Mills kept buying limited to immediate needs as offtake in processed urad prices remained largely steady.
Prices of urad in Guntur in Andhra Pradesh rose slightly by INR 25 per 100 kilograms from the previous week to INR 9,225 per 100 kg. End
