India's chana imports fall 45% on year in Jan-Jul, yellow pea rises 11%

MUMBAI – India imported 641,564 tonnes of chana in the first seven months of 2026, down 45% from the previous year, according to data from the Department of Commerce compiled by the India Pulses and Grains Association. The country imported 729,456 tonnes of yellow peas during Jan-Jul, up 11% from the previous year, the data showed.
Chana imports from Australia accounted for nearly 95% of imports during Jan-Jul at 609,352 tonnes, according to the data. India also imported 29,533 tonnes of chana from Tanzania, 1,604 tonnes from Myanmar, 862 tonnes from the UK, and 753 tonnes from other sources during this period.
India imported 579,493 tonnes of yellow peas from Canada, accounting for over 79% of the legume's total shipments during Jan-Jul, the data showed. The country also imported 146,304 tonnes of yellow peas from Russia and 3,659 tonnes from other countries. End
