MUMBAI – Prices of chana and masur were steady while prices of tur showed mixed trends in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Chana prices were unchanged amid steady festival demand, they said. Tur prices continued to rise in some markets on concern about lower production due to deficient rainfall, they said. Masur prices are expected to remain range-bound in the near term amid availability of imports, they said.

CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 6,700-INR 6,800 per 100 kilograms, said Dinesh Mangal, a local trader. Prices are unchanged amid steady festival demand, he said. Demand has declined slightly from the previous week as the initial rush for chana dissipated after the 10-day Ganesh festival began this week, he said. "Before the festival started, everyone wanted to stock up on chana. Now that the festival is underway, purchases in the market have relaxed," he said.

Prices are likely to remain range-bound with a positive bias in the near term, Mangal said. Upcoming festivals such as Navratri and Diwali are expected to maintain steady demand for chana, he said. Meanwhile, although concern about lower chana acreage in the upcoming rabi season persists, Mangal believes sowing is likely to occur without any hitches. Chana is a less water-intensive crop and the current soil moisture levels, though on the lower side, do not pose a risk to sowing, he said. "Less soil moisture is more of a threat to wheat and maize, not chana," he said.

Prices of chana in Delhi were unchanged at INR 6,625 per 100 kg, traders said.

TUR prices in Solapur, Maharashtra, rose by INR 50 per 100 kg to INR 8,300-INR 9,025 per 100 kg, Rahul Srinivas, a local trader, said. Prices continued to rise on worries about lower production in the ongoing kharif season, he said. Most tur-producing regions in Maharashtra have remained largely dry in the past few days, and temperatures have stayed above normal, he said. The brief spell of showers recorded over the weekend was not sufficient for the standing tur crop, which had been affected by below-normal rains in the region, he said.

"The crop will definitely get damaged in the Solapur belt," Srinivas said. The tur crop in Karnataka has also been impacted by the absence of significant showers, he said. Prices of tur could rise by another INR 500 per 100 kg in the near term as most of the market expects a significant decline in production this year, he said. Prices could touch INR 10,000 per 100 kg in the medium term unless the government begins to offload its stocks to keep up availability of tur in the country, he said.

Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, were unchanged at INR 9,200-INR 9,300 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

MASUR prices in Indore were steady at INR 6,000 per 100 kg, Mangal said. Prices are unchanged amid the lack of fresh cues in the market, he said. Though supply of the domestic crop has dried up, the availability of ample imports is meeting demand, he said. Most millers and traders also prefer imported masur as it is of better quality and cheaper than the domestic variety, he said. With more shipments of masur set to arrive in Indian ports in the next few months, prices are likely to remain in a narrow range, fluctuating by INR 50-INR 100 per 100 kg in the near term, he said.

Prices of the moti variety of masur in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, were steady at INR 5,800-INR 6,200 per 100 kg, according to the association.  End
