MUMBAI – Futures contracts of coriander on the NCDEX rose Wednesday as stocks tightened while turmeric futures fell as supply concerns eased amid favourable weather conditions, according to market participants. Jeera futures marked a rise while pepper fell on the exchange.
At 1549 IST, the most active October contract of TURMERIC was down nearly 0.7% at INR 20,750 per 100 kilograms. The contract fell as improved weather conditions brightened the outlook for the upcoming crop. However, the downtrend is likely to be limited by structurally tight supplies, declining inventories, and lower-than-expected expansion of sowing in key growing regions, Kedia Advisory said in a note. Support for turmeric is likely at INR 20,344-INR 20,618 per 100 kg, according to a report from SMC Investments and Advisors Ltd. The spice contract is expected to encounter resistance at INR 21,574-INR 22,284 per 100 kg, according to the brokerage.
CORIANDER's most active October contract was up nearly 2% at INR 14,688 per 100 kg on the NCDEX. Prices were supported as stock estimates at key producing centres fell sharply to around 2.5-2.7 million bags against a six-month requirement of 4.2-4.5 million bags, according to SMC Investments. Though seasonal demand is yet to gain momentum, limited availability of the spice could keep market participation alive, the brokerage added.
"From a price action perspective, INR 14,360 per 100 kg is the immediate support and the immediate resistance is at INR 15,100 per 100 kg," Kotak Neo analyst Ritesh Kumar Sahu said. Prices holding above the INR 14,360 mark could open the possibility of a move towards the INR 16,188-INR 17,000 per 100 kg range, he said. "A breakout and sustained move above INR 17,000 per 100 kg could extend the upside towards INR 17,800 per 100 kg and INR 19,800 per 100 kg," Sahu added.
The most active September contract for JEERA on the NCDEX was up 1.3% at INR 21,290 per 100 kg as supply of premium-quality bold seeds declined rapidly. Reports of outbreaks of blight disease in key growing regions across Gujarat have affected both crop quality and quantity, according to Kedia Advisory. However, SMC Investments expects the market to remain bearish in the INR 21,200-INR 21,900 per 100 kg range as both domestic and export demand remain subdued.
PEPPER's most active October contract was down slightly at INR 732.5 on the NCDEX. Though expectations of lower domestic output persist, increased imports from Sri Lanka and other sources offset this supply gap.
