MUMBAI – Wheat and rice stocks with the Food Corp. of India as of Sept. 1 declined from the previous month, but stayed markedly higher than the year-ago levels. As of Sept. 1, wheat stock in the central pool fell 29% from August to nearly 48 million tonnes, while that of rice was down nearly 3% from last month at 39.1 million tonnes, data from the FCI showed.

The government's wheat stocks have recorded a decline since June as the Centre ended its procurement activities during the same month. The September opening wheat stocks are up over 44% from the previous year, largely due to robust procurement this year. For the 2026-27 rabi marketing season that started in April, the government purchased 35.76 million tonnes of wheat, up over 19% on year and exceeding the revised target of 34.60 million tonnes.

The current wheat stocks are also significantly higher than the buffer norm for the quarter. According to buffer norms, minimum wheat stocks for Jul. 1 should be 27.58 million tonnes, including an operational stock of 24.58 million tonnes and a strategic reserve of 3.0 million tonnes. The government has set the buffer norm for opening stocks every third month and the next would be on Oct. 1.

As of Sept. 1, rice stocks in the central pool were 39.1 million tonnes, up nearly 6% from the previous year, FCI data showed. The current rice stocks are also far above the buffer norm of 13.54 million tonnes for July opening stock, which includes an operational stock of 11.54 million tonnes and a strategic reserve of 2.0 million tonnes.

Total food grain stocks with the FCI as of Sept. 1 were 87 million tonnes, down from 90.7 million tonnes in August, but up from 70.2 million tonnes last year, according to the data. The corporation stores essential food grains to ensure food security and to check prices by releasing its stocks through auctions under the open market sales scheme.

The FCI also held 30.8 million tonnes of unmilled paddy as of Sept. 1, down from 35.3 million tonnes a month ago, the data showed. Stocks of coarse grains also fell to 714,000 tonnes from 958,000 tonnes a month ago, the data showed.  End
