MUMBAI – Urad prices are expected to be range-bound in the near term, the India Pulses and Grains Association said in its weekly report Monday. The urad crop outlook in the ongoing kharif season remains uncertain, while demand is likely to rise during the festival season, which could support prices. However, the availability of imports could maintain pressure on prices, keeping them bound in a narrow range, the association said.

Forecast of unfavourable weather in Madhya Pradesh and Bundelkhand have clouded the kharif crop production outlook in these regions, as both intense rainfall and a dry spell could impact the standing crop, the association said. At the same time, urad crop arrivals from Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh are expected to be sizeable and of good quality, it said.

Millers have reduced their purchases ahead of the arrival of kharif crop as they would prefer the fresh crop over the old stocks, the association said. Consumption is expected to improve in the ongoing festival season but traders and millers could limit most of their demand to need-based purchases, it said. Fresh arrivals are likely to begin in full swing from late September. The demand for good quality urad is expected to prevent a sharp fall in prices once arrivals begin.

Comfortable supplies from Myanmar and Brazil are expected to keep prices from rising, the association said. However, shipment from Brazil are expected to slow, while those from Myanmar could also decline due to price disparity, it said.

Prices of urad remained largely unchanged in the week ended Saturday, the association said. Demand remained need-based, but concerns about the urad crop amid persistent rainfall in Madhya Pradesh kept prices from falling. Prices of urad in Chandausi, Uttar Pradesh, were unchanged from the previous week at INR 9,000 per 100 kilograms.  End
