NEW DELHI – Grain-based feedstocks contributed 6.24 billion litres of ethanol to India's cumulative supplies by the end of August, accounting for nearly 70% of total supplies under ethanol supply year 2025-26, according to data compiled by the All India Distillers' Association. Total ethanol supplies stood at 8.95 billion litres as of August end, against 10.48 billion litres contracted. This implied that around 85% of the contracted quantity has been supplied, the association said. 

 

Maize was the largest individual feedstock, contributing 3.45 billion litres, followed by surplus Food Corporation of India rice at 2.14 billion litres and damaged food grains at 640 million litres, according to data provided by the association. Grain-based feedstocks had a total allocation of 7.6 billion litres for the year, of which 6.24 billion litres had been supplied by August-end, the association said. 

 

Sugar-based feedstocks contributed 2.71 billion litres against an allocation of 2.89 billion litres. Sugarcane juice accounted for 1.49 billion litres, B Heavy Molasses gave 1.07 billion litres, and C Heavy Molasses gave 150 million litres, the association said. 

 

"India has now built a sizable production and supply ecosystem, and the focus must increasingly shift towards ensuring its efficient utilisation," Bharati Balaji, deputy director general of All India Distillers' Association, said. "As we move into the next phase of the clean mobility transition, Flex-Fuel Vehicles, CBG (compressed biomethane gas), SAF (sustainable aviation fuel), and wider applications can create additional demand avenues. A predictable policy framework that supports demand creation alongside production will be essential to sustaining investment, strengthening farmer-linked value chains and advancing India's energy-security objectives," she said.  End
