MUMBAI – Prices of chana rose, while those of tur showed mixed trends and masur prices were unchanged in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Chana prices rose due to firm demand for upcoming festivals, they said. Tur prices corrected in some markets after posting a sharp rise, while masur prices were unchanged due to lack of fresh cues, they said.

 

CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, rose by INR 50 per 100 kilograms to INR 6,750-INR 6,850 per 100 kg Thursday, said Dinesh Mangal, a local trader. Prices have risen due to strong demand for chana for upcoming festivals, beginning with Ganesh Chaturthi next week, he said. Many wholesalers, retailers, and sweet makers have ramped up purchases of chana dal, or processed chana, and besan, or chana flour, he said. "This surge in demand was supposed to begin 15 days ago, but it is finally here now. Prices have risen by INR 150-INR 200 per 100 kg in the last few days because of firm festival buying," he said.

 

Prices are likely to rise by another INR 150-INR 200 per 100 kg in the next few weeks as demand for festival consumption is expected to remain strong, Mangal said. "Demand will stay firm till Dussehra at least," he said. The rise in prices is likely to be limited only if the government decides to offload more of its chana stocks at lower rates, he said. Currently, the government is selling small quantities of its stock at prices that are in the same range as spot market rates.

 

Prices of chana in Delhi rose by INR 25 per 100 kg to INR 6,675-INR 6,700 per 100 kg Thursday, traders said.

 

TUR prices in Solapur, Maharashtra, fell by INR 50 per 100 kg to INR 8,300-INR 8,925 per 100 kg Thursday, said Rahul Srinivas, a local trader. Prices have corrected slightly post the uptrend seen in the last few days, he said. Prices have touched INR 9,000 per 100 kg in several markets across the country due to concerns about tur production in the ongoing kharif season, he said. Rainfall in the main tur-producing regions in Maharashtra and Karnataka has been largely deficient, leading to a decline in tur sowing, he said. Maharashtra and Karnataka are the top producers of tur in the country.

 

"Tur sowing in and around Solapur has only reached 40?cause of the lack of rainfall. Now, if deficient rains continue, there will be crop damage and loss, and only 20% of the sown crop could be salvageable," Mangal said. Prices are likely to keep rising in the near term as the market expects a dip in overall production of tur across the country, he said.

 

Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 9,200-INR 9,300 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

 

MASUR prices in Indore were steady at INR 6,000 per 100 kg, Mangal said. Prices of masur had risen by INR 50-INR 100 per 100 kg last week due to positive market sentiment, with a strong uptrend in major pulses such as chana and tur, he said. However, demand for masur remains steady to weak and, as such, prices were unchanged, he said. Though arrivals of the crop have reduced significantly, the ample availability of imports is sufficient to meet demand, he said.

 

Prices of the moti variety of masur in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, were steady at INR 5,800-INR 6,200 per 100 kg, according to the association.  End
