MUMBAI – Prices of soybean and groundnut fell in Gujarat, tracking the quality of the seed available for sale Wednesday, local traders said. Mustard prices were mixed in major Rajasthan markets as the oilseed rose in Kota but remained stable in Jaipur, traders said. In Madhya Pradesh, soybean and groundnut prices remained unchanged as market participants await fresh crops, according to a local trader.

 

SOYBEAN prices in Kota fell INR 100 per 100 kilograms to INR 5,000-INR 6,850 per 100 kg, local trader Mahesh Sameriya said. Prices fell on weak demand for the poor quality of seed available for sale on the market, Sameriya said. Arrivals of the oilseed remained steady at 7,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kgs).

 

In Visavadar, Gujarat, soybean prices fell INR 200 per 100 kg despite lower arrivals, Ashok Virvani, a local trader, said. Arrivals were down 200 kg to 1.3 tonnes from 1.5 tonnes Tuesday, he said. According to the trader, prices of soybeans fell, tracking quality. However, due to insufficient rainfall in the state, the kharif production outlook paints a bleak picture as crops deteriorate due to a lack of showers, he said. 

 

Soybean prices in Ratlam in Madhya Pradesh were quoted at INR 3,000-INR 6,500 per 100 kg, according to a local trader, Narendra Porwal. Arrivals were seen at 210 tonnes, he added. He said the area hasn't seen adequate rainfall for the past couple of days, which is negatively affecting crop production. 

 

Prices of GROUNDNUT in Visavadar fell INR 200 per 100 kg to INR 6,000-INR 7,600 per 100 kg, Virvani said. "Prices will reduce a bit before they can go up again," the trader said. "Groundnut is currently trading at a higher range, and the seed has not witnessed higher levels than this," the trader added. Arrivals rose significantly to 10.8 tonnes from 3.72 tonnes Tuesday, according to the trader.

 

Groundnut prices in Ratlam were seen at INR 3,300-INR 7,400 per 100 kg, Porwal said. Arrivals were seen at 150 tonnes. Prices of groundnut remain broadly unchanged as market participants await new crops, but whitefly and mite infestation are likely to bring yields down, the trader said. 

 

According to a CRISIL intelligence report, rainfall this month is expected to be below-normal, and the key concern has therefore shifted to yields from acreage, particularly where irrigation support is limited. The India Meteorological Department and private weather agency Skymet expect September rains to be 9% and 20?ficient, respectively. Skymet has also forecast a 15% rainfall deficit for the full season, making this year's rainfall the weakest in a decade if these projections materialise, the report added. 

 

A large part of rabi production depends on how the southwest monsoon replenishes soil moisture, groundwater, reservoirs and irrigation resources. So far, rainfall deficiency has widened to 14%, which is worse than expected for the southwest monsoon, the report showed. Soil moisture levels run the risk of deteriorating because of the combined impact of deficient rainfall and above-normal temperatures. The all-India mean temperature in August was the highest for the month since 1901; the meteorological department expects above-normal temperatures to persist through September as well, the CRISIL report added.

 

MUSTARD prices in Kota rose nearly INR 350 per 100 kg to INR 7,100-INR 8,250 per 100 kg, according to Sameriya. Prices rose as the seeds available for sale had a higher oil percentage, the trader added. Arrivals fell by 1,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) to 4,000 bags, he said. In Jaipur, prices remained stable at INR 8,450-INR 8,475 per 100 kg, according to Marudhar Trading Agency. Arrivals fell 50,000 bags (1 bag = 40 kg) to 200,000 bags, the agency added.
