MUMBAI – Prices of tur are likely to rise further in the short term due to tight supplies, concerns about the kharif tur crop, and expectations of higher demand, the India Pulses and Grains Association said in its weekly report Monday. While there is no immediate shortage of tur, market sentiment remains positive, which is likely to keep prices supported, the association said.
Arrivals of the domestic tur crop have reduced significantly, while imports have declined, the association said. Tur imports from Africa are priced higher than domestic spot market rates, and fresh shipments are unlikely in the near term. As such, demand for tur during festivals is likely to depend on stocks held by traders, importers, and mills, it said.
Concerns regarding the crop conditions remain in Maharashtra and south Indian states due to a prolonged spell of deficient rainfall, the association said. Poor plant growth has been reported in many of these regions, while drought has been declared in parts of Karnataka, it said.
Although there is no immediate shortage of tur, market sentiment remains positive. The government holds around 1 million tonnes of tur, but concerns about lower production remain, the association said. Fresh shipments of tur from African countries are likely from late September.
Prices of tur rose in the week ended Saturday due to a rise in prices of tur dal, or processed tur, which encouraged a rise in raw tur prices, the association said. A rise in prices of imports and low supply also supported prices. Prices of tur in Akola, Maharashtra, rose INR 325 per 100 kilograms from last week to INR 8,800-INR 8,825 per 100 kg. End
