MUMBAI – Chana prices are expected to rise in the near term due to a rise in consumption during the upcoming festivals, the India Pulses and Grains Association said in its weekly report Monday. Demand from millers and traders is likely to increase, while supply of chana remains limited, the association said. Deficit rainfall across the country is expected to impact sowing in the upcoming rabi season, which could support prices further. However, large government stocks are likely to limit a steep rise in prices.
Demand from besan mills, snack-makers, wholesalers, and retailers is expected to improve in the short term with various festivals such as Ganesh Chaturthi on the horizon. Limited imports, a lower crop in top exporter Australia, firm import prices, lower domestic arrivals, and tight sales by stockists and traders are also likely to increase prices, the association said.
A shortfall in precipitation in Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Telangana is expected to affect the upcoming rabi sowing, the association said. However, a sharp rise in prices is unlikely due to the government holding substantial stocks of chana, it said.
The market will continue monitoring the sales of chana by the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd., monsoon progress, and crop development in Australia.
Prices of chana rose in the week ended Saturday due to strong demand from traders and millers amid low availability, the association said. While NAFED continued its sales of chana stocks, the quantity being sold remained limited and priced at higher levels, it said. Prices of chana in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, rose by INR 100 per 100 kilograms from the previous week to INR 6,650-INR 6,700 per 100 kg. End
