NEW DELHI – The Food and Agriculture Organization's All Rice Price Index rose 0.5% on month to 109.0 points in August. The index was 7.4% higher on year, supported by gains in Indica rice prices, the FAO said in its September rice price update report.

The Indica index rose 1.2% on month in August, while the Japonica and Aromatic indices declined 2.7% and 1.3%, respectively. The Glutinous rice index was broadly unchanged from July.

In the Asian Indica rice markets, price gains were most pronounced in Vietnam, where delays in the early summer-autumn harvest, higher costs, lower domestic production, and reduced imports from Cambodia supported the prices, the FAO said. Vietnam's 25% broken rice rose to $418.4 per tonne in August from $389.1 per tonne in July. Vietnam's 5% broken rice rose to $441.4 per tonne in August from $425.3 per tonne in July, while Vietnam's fragrant 5% broken rice fell to $491.7 per tonne in August from $507.1 per tonne in July.

In India, rice quotations continued to be supported by a strong pace of sales, particularly for parboiled rice. India's 5% broken rice export price rose 1% on month to $361.9 per tonne in August, while parboiled rice prices rose 4% to $371.1 per tonne. India's 5% broken rice price was 4% lower on year, while parboiled rice was 1% higher. India's Pusa Basmati remained steady at $1,050.0 per tonne in August, maintaining its five-month-long streak. The price of 25% broken non-basmati rice exported from India rose to $346.7 per tonne in August from $340.8 per tonne in July.

In Pakistan, prices of the 5% broken rice fell 2% on month to $401.4 per tonne ahead of new crop arrivals due to inconsistent demand and arrivals of the new harvest in the market. Pakistan's basmati rice prices fell to $1,118.0 per tonne in August from $1,132.4 in July.

Thailand's 100% B white rice price rose 1% to $477.3 per tonne and Thai parboiled rice prices rose 1% to $485.3 per tonne, mostly due to the Thai Baht's appreciation against the US dollar, the report said. Thailand's A1 Super rice variety fell to $372.0 in August from $408.0 in July. Thailand's 25% broken variety also fell to $447.3 in August from $452.8 in July. According to the FAO, demand in Asia remained inconsistent and was largely confined to Southeast Asian buyers, particularly Malaysia and the Philippines.

In the Americas, rice market sentiment turned bullish as the short 2026-27 US crop is being harvested and expectations of further reductions in 2027-28 crops in MERCOSUR countries. US No. 2, 4% broken rice prices rose 9% on month to $573.0 per tonne, while Brazil's 5% broken rice prices rose 5% to $541.8 per tonne. Brazilian farmers' reluctance to sell amid stronger miller demand supported domestic and export offers and also lifted prices in other MERCOSUR-origin rice by keeping Brazilian imports robust, the FAO said.  End
