India Wednesday rainfall 5% above normal; season-to-date deficit at 13%, says IMD

MUMBAI – India recorded 7.3 millimetres of rain Wednesday, 5?ove the normal of 6.9 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. During Jun. 1–Sept. 2, the country received 618.5 millimetres of rain, 13?low the normal of 714.3 millimetres for the period.

 

Of the country's four homogeneous regions, east and northeast India, and northwest India registered "large excess" rains. Central India received "deficient" rains, and the south registered "large deficient" rains. The east and northeast region received 84?ove normal rainfall at 16.9 millimetres and central India recorded 3.5 millimetres of rainfall, 56% below normal. South India received 81% below-normal rains at 1.0 millimetres and northwest India recorded 10.3 millimetres of rainfall, 95?ove normal.

 

Jharkhand and east Uttar Pradesh received the highest rainfall at 31.6 millimetres and 30.2 millimetres each, followed by Uttarakhand at 28.4 millimetres, according to the weather bureau. It has issued a red alert for east Madhya Pradesh amid forecasts of extremely heavy rainfall till Thursday.

 

Of the 36 subdivisions in the country, rainfall was "large deficient" in 18, "deficient" in five, "large excess" in eight, "excess" in three, and "normal" in one. There was no rainfall in one subdivision, according to the data.  End
