India July tea production down 10% at 164.33 million kg, says Tea Board

MUMBAI – Tea production in India fell almost 10% on year to 164.33 million kilograms in July, according to provisional data released by Tea Board India. The country had produced 182.54 million kg of tea a year ago. Tea production in north India fell 13.5% on year to 139.77 million kg, while in south India it rose nearly 18% to 24.56 million kg.
Tea output from the Assam Valley fell to 86.96 million kg from 99.66 million kg a year ago. Tea production in the Terai fell to 18.23 million kg from 21.50 million kg. Production in Darjeeling fell to 810,000 kg from 950,000 kg. Output from Tamil Nadu rose 22% to 19.45 million kg from 15.92 million kg a year ago.
In West Bengal, tea production fell 14% to 43.87 million kg from 50.96 million kg a year ago. In Kerala, production rose slightly to 4.70 million kg from 4.64 million kg. Tea production from other regions of the country fell almost 16% on year to 4.82 million kg.
In July, India produced 143.10 million kg of crush, tear, and curl, or CTC, tea, 18.76 million kg of orthodox tea and 2.47 million kg of green tea. In Jan–Jul, India produced 658.25 million kg of tea, the data showed. End
