MUMBAI – Ex-mill sugar prices in major markets across Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh remained flat on Monday as demand and supply were largely on a par, traders said. In other key south Indian markets such as Karnataka, prices fell by INR 40 per 100 kg but remained flat in Tamil Nadu. Prices also fell by INR 50-INR 60 per 100 kg in Gujarat, an official from the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories said.

Sugar prices had risen sharply in the past few days amid speculation over sugar stock availability, leading to panic buying, and mills grew reluctant to release their stocks. High prices were also supported by the sales quota set by the government for August, as it fell short of market expectations.

However, sugar prices have recently started to correct in select markets as buying interest has weakened at higher levels. The sugar market has been rallying with intermittent price corrections since June amid concerns over deficient monsoon rainfall and forecasts of El Nino strengthening in August and September.

Traders are in a wait-and-watch mode for government action to bring down market prices. On Sunday, Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Pralhad Joshi held a review meeting with the secretary and senior officials of the Department of Food and Public Distribution to assess the current stock position of sugar, production levels and its requirement for the ongoing sugar season, according to a post by the minister on social media platform X. During the meeting, Joshi emphasised on the close monitoring of availability and timely measures to maintain adequate stocks of sugar and ensure a stable supply throughout the season, the minister said.

Following are the highlights of ex-mill prices of sugar in the domestic market:

--Flat INR 4,830-INR 4,960 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Flat at INR 4,780-INR 4,830 per 100 kg in Kolhapur

--Flat at INR 4,680-INR 4,790 per 100 kg in Uttar Pradesh

--Down INR 40 at INR 4,630-INR 4, 660 per 100 kg in Karnataka

--Down INR50- INR 60 at INR 4,800-INR 4,860 per 100 kg in Gujarat

--Flat at INR 4,725-INR 4,850 per 100 kg in Tamil Nadu

At 1608 IST, the price of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange was marginally down at 16.44 cents per pound.  End

US$1 = INR 95.30
