MUMBAI – Prices of chana were steady, while prices of tur and urad showed mixed trends in key spot markets across the country, traders said. The uptrend in chana prices paused temporarily, though demand remained firm for the upcoming festival season, they said. Tur and urad prices rose in some markets tracking a rise in prices of imports, they said.

CHANA prices in Akola, Maharashtra, were steady at INR 6,625-INR 6,650 per 100 kilograms, said Ankit Kedia, a local trader. Though demand for chana for the upcoming festival season remains firm, the uptrend in prices has temporarily paused, he said. "Prices haven't showed a proper uptrend because festival demand has only just started," he said. Prices are expected to rise further in the near term, and remain in the upper range from September to November as many festivals will take place back-to-back, he said.

Prices are also supported by tightening supply conditions, Kedia said. Arrivals of the rabi crop have declined significantly, he said. Most traders and stockists also do not hold sufficient stocks of chana. "It's only the government and big companies who have good stocks of chana currently," he said. The government has been selling its stocks of chana during the past month, but it has not impacted prices as the quantities being sold are limited and prices in the range of spot market rates, he said. The government is expected to sell more of its stocks once prices rise considerably, he said. The market expects prices to rise to INR 7,000 per 100 kg during Sept-Nov, he said.

Prices of chana in Delhi were steady at INR 6,375-INR 6,400 per 100 kg, traders said.

TUR prices in Akola rose by INR 50 per 100 kg to INR 8,375-INR 8,400 per 100 kg Tuesday, Kedia said. Prices have risen tracking a rise in prices of imports from Myanmar, he said. Prices of Myanmar tur had risen by INR 200 per 100 kg in the past few days, which has prompted a slight rise in prices of the domestic variety as well, he said. Demand for tur remains largely need-based, with millers and traders making limited purchases, he said. Unlike chana, demand for tur does not see a significant rise during the festival season, he said.

Arrivals of tur in the market are low but steady, Kedia said. Prices of tur are expected to remain bound in a narrow range in the near term, depending on the need-based demand from millers and traders and the movement in import prices, he said.

Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 8,400-INR 8,500 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

URAD prices at Chandausi in Uttar Pradesh rose by INR 50 per 100 kg to INR 9,300-INR 9,350 per 100 kg Tuesday, according to the association. Prices of urad in Jaipur, Rajasthan, were steady at INR 8,200-INR 9,200 per 100 kg. Prices rose in some markets tracking the rise in prices of imports, traders said.

Urad prices are expected to be under pressure in the short term due to weak demand and comfortable supply, the association said in its weekly report Monday. Demand from millers and traders stays low due to weaker demand for urad dal, or processed urad. Meanwhile, imports are steadily arriving at the Chennai port and will continue doing so till mid-August, which is expected to weigh on sentiment, the association said.  End
