MUMBAI – The area under kharif crops in Rajasthan stood at 13.18 million hectares as of Wednesday, down more than 8% from 14.36 million a year ago, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The state's normal acreage for the season is 16.41 million hectares, of which over 80% has been covered so far. The area under cereals and pulses has taken a hit year-on-year, while that under oilseeds has increased.

 

Maize acreage in the state rose to 951,301 hectares from 888,477 hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area under paddy was down at 296,025 hectares from 316,464 hectares a year ago, while that under bajra fell to 3.54 million hectares from 3.91 million hectares.

 

The area under moong slipped to 2.11 million hectares from 2.26 million hectares a year ago, according to the report. The acreage of urad was up at 375,325 hectares from 311,345 hectares a year ago, while that of tur rose to 3,708 hectares from 1,874 hectares. The total area under all pulses fell to 3.23 million hectares from 3.49 million hectares a year ago.

 

The total area under all oilseeds so far was 2.17 million hectares, up from 2.10 million a year ago, the report showed. The area under groundnut rose to 1.07 million hectares from 958,514 hectares, but that under soybean declined to 917,171 hectares from 970,297 hectares.

 

Cotton acreage in the state was down at 533,162 hectares from 628,104 hectares a year ago. The area under guar, another major kharif crop in the state, fell to 1.52 million hectares from 2.18 million hectares.

 

Kharif crops are sown at the beginning of the southwest monsoon season, which usually starts mid-June, and harvested in October. During Jun. 1–Jul. 30, Rajasthan received 176.6 millimetres of rainfall, 17?low normal, according to the India Meteorological Department. The monsoon advanced over the state on Jul. 2, seven days after the normal onset date of Jun. 25, according to the weather department.

 

Active pre-monsoon conditions, along with heavy rainfall in the first few days of July, have enabled farmers in Rajasthan to begin sowing on time. However, even with active rains in the second half of July making up for some of the deficiency in the state, kharif sowing has not kept pace.  End
