MUMBAI – The intensity and spread of rainfall over south peninsular India is likely to revive during Aug. 6-12 due to formation of multiple weather systems over the region, the India Meteorological Department said in its extended range forecast for the next two weeks on Thursday. Normal to above normal rainfall is also expected over east India during the same period, while rainfall is expected to be below normal in the remaining parts of the country, the weather department said. 

 

South peninsular India has been largely deprived of heavy showers in the past few weeks due to the absence of active weather systems over and near the region. In the week ended Wednesday, rainfall in the region was 33?low normal at 33.1 millimetres. Rainfall in northwest India during the week was 4?ove normal at 54.59 millimetres, while in central India it was 109.5 millimetres, 41?ove normal. Other than south India, rainfall was also 49?low normal at 47.1 millimetres in east and northeast India. Rainfall over the country as a while during the week was 1?ove normal at 67.8 millimetres.

 

Rainfall in south India was 26?low normal at 35.9 millimetres in the week ended Jun. 22, data from the weather department said. 

 

A shear zone is expected to develop over south peninsular India during Aug. 6–12, the weather bureau said. An anomalous upper air cyclonic circulation is also likely to develop over coastal Karnataka during that period, while the Tropical Easterly Jet is likely to be at its normal position over south India, the bureau said. An anomalous cyclonic circulation is an atmospheric rotation pattern that moves counterclockwise and which promotes cloud development and heavy precipitation. A Tropical Easterly Jet is a temporary upper-tropospheric wind flowing from east to west which plays a key role in strengthening the southwest monsoon.

 

The combination of these weather systems is expected to lead to heavy to very heavy rainfall over the coastal areas of Konkan and Goa, coastal Karnataka, and Kerala during Aug. 6–12. Scattered to fairly widespread rainfall with isolated heavy showers are also likely over the remaining parts of Peninsular India during some days of the week.

 

Rainfall over the country as a whole could be normal during Aug. 6–12. The weather bureau also sees heavy to very heavy showers over parts of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, West Bengal, Sikkim, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh during the period.

 

Intense showers are expected to continue over central and west India till Wednesday, the weather department said. Rainfall activity is likely to be normal to above normal over most parts of west and central India during the period, and near normal over the remaining parts of the country. As such, rainfall is expected to be near normal over the country as a whole till Wednesday, the department said.  End
