MUMBAI – Futures contracts of spices on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange closed higher Friday. Turmeric futures hit a record high and extended gains to the third consecutive week amid firm demand and production concerns.

The most active August contract of TURMERIC closed 3.7% higher at INR 21,724 per 100 kg, after hitting a fresh record high of INR 21,850 intraday. Prices rose amid worries over the upcoming crop and its quality as a large share of arrivals continues to fall short of expected standards, SMC Investments and Advisors Ltd. said.

"Weather remains the bigger worry. Erratic rainfall adds further pressure — both on the standing crop and the remaining sowing window — with waterlogging in key growing belts forcing re-sowing in affected areas, which could delay crop establishment and weigh on eventual yields," it added. Turmeric is a seven-to-nine-month crop requiring continuous irrigation.

India recorded rainfall of 2.6 millimetres on Wednesday, 73?low the normal of 9.6 millimetres, data from the Indian Meteorological Department showed. During Jun. 1-Jul. 15, the rainfall deficit was 23% at 227 millimetres.

The most active August contract of CORIANDER was up 2% at INR 15,880 per 100 kg, supported by persistent supply tightness in markets. Last week, coriander prices had hit a record high of INR 16,188 amid healthy industrial demand and declining arrivals. "Monthly arrivals stood at 11,626 tonnes, down 23% from 15,145 tonnes a year earlier, a supply contraction sizeable enough to keep the market's undertone firm," SMC added.

The most active August contract of JEERA was up 1.2% at INR 20,980 per 100 kg, as fresh buying emerged at lower prices despite easy availability. "Weekly arrivals stood 64% higher y-o-y at 6,873 tonnes, underscoring the comfortable supply scenario," SMC said.

"Unless demand strengthens or arrivals taper off, this supply overhang is likely to keep prices confined to a range in the near term. Sentiment is further weighed down by reports of a healthy crop in key competing origins such as China and Syria, adding to the overall comfortable global availability," it added.
