MUMBAI – Sowing progress during the kharif season remained slow amid a delayed monsoon onset and deficient rainfall across many parts of the country. As of Friday, kharif acreage across the country was at 53.13 million hectares, down 16% from a year ago, according to data from the agriculture ministry.
While most crop cultivation is lagging, oilseeds and pulses have taken the hardest blow, particularly groundnut and tur, data showed.
The area sown under oilseeds was 21% lower on year at 11.78 million hectares, as groundnut fell 34% and soybean declined nearly 16% on year. Though sunflower acreage rose 63% on year amid an attractive minimum support price, it did not offset the decline in acreage of other major oilseeds.
Pulses acreage as of Friday declined over 23% on year to 5.66 million hectares, with tur and urad each down 30% and moong down nearly 11%. The area under paddy, the largest kharif crop, was down nearl 9% on year at 11.47 million hectares. Maize acreage declined nearlt 20% on year to 5.60 million hectares, data showed.
Last week, Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said he hoped farmers would accelerate kharif sowing as rainfall gained momentum in July. After recording a 40% rainfall deficit in June, monsoon rainfall had briefly improved in early July, but has again weakened over most parts of India, and daily rainfall has fallen back to a 'below-normal' trend since Friday.
On Sunday, India recorded 2.2 millimetres of rainfall, 75?low the normal of 9.1 mm, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. Although the season deficit has narrowed, the cumulative rainfall remains below the normal for the period. During Jun. 1–Jul. 12, the country received 219.4 mm of rainfall, 18?low the normal for the period.
Among cash crops, sugarcane and jute registered a marginal rise in acreage, while cotton cultivation remained well below the year-ago levels. The area under sugarcane as of Friday was up 2% on year at 5.76 million hectares, but the area under cotton fell over 15% on year to 7.95 million hectares, the data showed.
The following table details the sowing of key kharif crops as of Friday, in hectares, compared with year-ago levels and the year-on-year change in percentage terms:
