MUMBAI – After a brief spell of widespread rains early July, the monsoon current has again weakened over most parts of India, and daily rainfall has fallen back to a 'below-normal' trend since Friday. On Saturday, India recorded 5.0 millimetres of rainfall, 47% below the normal of 9.5 mm, according to data from the India Meteorological Department.

Although the season deficit has narrowed, the cumulative rainfall remains below the normal for the period. During Jun. 1–Jul. 11, the country received 217.2 mm of rainfall, 16% below the normal of 257.8 mm for the period.

IMD said the monsoon trough covered the entire country Thursday. However, rainfall activity over many regions has subsided since then and is likely to remain subdued in the coming days due to the weakening of several weather systems across the country. 

Of the four homogeneous regions in the country, only east and northeast India recorded a "normal" rainfall at 13.7 mm on Saturday. Rainfall was "deficient" in northwest India, falling 23% below the normal. In central India and south India, rainfall was "large deficient" at 1.7 mm and 2.5 mm, respectively. 

Of the 36 subdivisions in the country, rainfall was "large excess" in two, "excess" in four, "large deficient" in 18, "deficient" in seven, and "normal" in three, according to the data. There was no rainfall in two subdivisions. End
